Another one of Kyoto Animation’s and Key’s famous works, Air, is well-known for its story and characters. The synopsis is as follows:
Yukito Kunisaki is on a journey in search of the Winged Maiden who was bound to the sky centuries ago, after hearing an old childhood tale from his mother. As Yukito shows his puppet show to people in an attempt to make some money, he finds himself in a small town in which he did not expect to stay very long. However, when he meets an unusual girl named Misuzu, things take a drastic turn as he is invited to stay with her.
By staying in the quaint town, Yukito soon becomes friends with the locals. As he gets to know them better, he learns of their problems and decides to help, putting his search for the Winged Maiden on hold. With his search on hold, and his growing attachment to Misuzu and the small town, will Yukito ever find the Winged Maiden, or is she closer than he thought?
Air was another one of my first anime series that I’ve watched as well in addition to Kanon. Now that I think about it, the first anime series that I watched were mostly KyoAni works. Guess that contributed to me becoming a big fan of Kyoto Animation. 😛
Anyhow, Air is a nice, short anime with 13 episodes and 2 episodes in its mini-series (Air in Summer). The main series focuses on the main hero, Kunisaki Yukito, and the three heroines, Kamio Misuzu, Kirishima Kano, and Tohno Minagi. Yukito is a wandering traveler who is able to perform stringless puppeteering. He wanders in search of the Winged Maiden at the request of his now deceased mother. The supporting characters are few but enough to make an impact on the heroines’ arcs, Kamio Haruka (Misuzu’s aunt), Kirishima Hijiri (Kano’s elder sister), and Michiru (Minagi’s friend). The other significant characters are Kanna, Ryuya, and Uraha, who are feudal-era characters and we will see them in flashbacks in the series. They are also the main characters of the mini-series, Air in Summer, as well.
First arc up is Kano’s arc. Kawashima Kano is a wily, energetic girl who always wear a yellow scarf around her wrist, saying that it will allow her to use magic. She is always seen with a cute, but weird dog named Potato that says “pico” instead! Anyway, Kano is a likable character and she is loved dearly by her sister, Hijiri. Without going into major details, I can at least say that this arc has supernatural hints related to Yukito’s search for the Winged Maiden but not without consequences. Not to worry, as this arc ends off on a good note. ^_^
Second arc is Minagi’s arc. Minagi is a shy, quiet top student who was isolated from others. Up until she met Yukito, her only friend was Michiru, who plays a significant role in this arc. Minagi is hiding a secret, which is where everything starts from in this arc as Yukito tries to help her. It’s more emotional here in this arc in my opinion, (but that’s a good thing!) as we learn and get to know more about Minagi and Michiru. The plot ties things off in a sad, but surprisingly nice way, and I really enjoyed this arc the most.
And now, we come to the final arc, Mizusu’s arc. This arc is perhaps the most emotional I’ve seen and I’ve actually come very close to crying. Misuzu is a cheerful, clumsy girl who particularly likes dinosaurs and has a tendency to say “Gao~”. Mizusu has the most tragic backstory and possibly has the most supernatural aspect, when coupled with Kanna’s backstory. You will see later on how they are related when you watch this series. (If you already watched, then you know what I mean.) Ahhh~ Really, this arc is so bittersweet with Mizusu and Haruko bonding and also extremely sad with Kanna, Ryuya, and Uraha. 😥
And so, we near the end of this post. As expected from KyoAni, Air is one great, short series that will surely grasps your heartstrings for the heroines, particularly Misuzu. The voice actors are great as well, and the animation is quite nice with beautiful scenery and backgrounds. This KyoAni series is highly recommended, and if you do watch it, make sure to have a box of tissues handy! And so, I shall wrap up by including some very nice wallpapers for you guys and gals.
Note: I may add another post, this time regarding the mini-series, Air in Summer.
